Young Life Leader Convicted of Sexual Assaults

In early September, Jonathan King Meyer, was sentenced to 6 to 20 years for sexually assaulting three teens he met through his work as a volunteer Young Life leader.

The assaults occurred in the summer of 2006, as Mr. Meyer befriended the three boys during his time as a Young Life leader.  He was their leader to Young Life’s Timberwolf Lake property in summer 2006 and also served as a lunch supervisor in their school.

This criminal conviction, again shows the vulnerabilities of this type of ministry model.

The only official response I could find from Young Life was a brief statement by Terry Swenson, expressing sadness and cooperation with the investigation.  What I have yet to see, is any real soul-searching on how to help prevent such incidents from occurring in the first place.

You can watch a local news report about this case here.  Other news reports can be found here and here.

I don’t know if you saw the actual report, but he was not a young life leader. In fact, he was a youth leader for Christ memorial church. Get your facts straight…

Well, in my day, I knew of many youth leaders on church staff that also did Young Life. From what I could gather from the news reports, he worked with a Young Life program through his church and met the victims at a Young Life camp.

If he had no affiliation with Young Life, then why did Young Life’s Terry Swenson make this statement to news reporters?

Young Life spokesman Terry Swenson said Friday the organization was “saddened” to learn of the allegations. He confirmed Meyer volunteered with Young Life from 2005 to 2008.

“Young Life will cooperate fully with authorities in their investigation into this matter,” Swenson wrote in a statement. “Young Life is committed to the safety and well-being of young people involved in its ministry.”
